RACE REPORT # 7 / ELKINS HOT SHOE & HAGERSTOWN

ELKINS, WV – JULY 24TH -  1ST PLACE

For this week of racing, dad and I would be flying for a change. The first race took us to Elkins, West Virginia for a Hot Shoe national on Friday night. We met the Weidman family there – they are transporting our bikes.  The track was pretty awesome. It was a banked half-mile with dark clay, so it really let you hang it out.  I ended up second fastest in the  scratch heat  behind Colt Chebultz . In the main, I didn’t get the best start and I found myself in fifth place coming out of the first turn. Before the second lap was over, I had already picked off Jeffrey Carver, Jeremy Higgens, and Mike Toon and had my sights set on Kayl Kolkman- who was the race leader. I spent most of the race less than three bike lengths off his back wheel, but just couldn’t seem to make up enough time to make the pass. I came out with second place and some good feelings about the grand national in Hagerstown, Maryland the next night. To my surprise, I actually ended up with the win after Kayl got DQ’d because he had the wrong tire compound. Not exactly the best way to win, but I’ll take it!

WEST BRANCH MI, ELKINS WV AND HAGERSTOWN MD

West Branch , Michigan.

Over the last three years a big dirt track fan we call "Klug" puts on these little short track races during a bike rally up North in West Branch, Michigan. It is only 45 minutes from my house, with free sign up and a decent purse. You have to go. I decided to take my one '09 450 Honda which I thought would work pretty well. The track was really hard-looking when we got there...usually it is all broken up and looks like it needs water. This year it looked better than ever. I felt good in practice. Every time I came in I made a little change here and there, and it kept making the bike way better.
I won my Heat race and was fast qualifier and sat on the pole for the main! I didn't get the hole shot in the final as Kurtis Lee and Nichole Cheza got in front of me. I was able to get by Nicole and a couple of laps latergot by Kurtis. I was starting to check out and there was a red flag...Nichole and Bryan Bigelow were down. It was a single file restart and I got the jump and was starting to check out again, and there was another red flag. Since there were only 5 laps to go, the referee decided to call the race. I ended up winning the race and Brandon Bergen got 2nd. It was something to do while we had the three-week long break.

Feel'n Groovy?

If there ever was a track I didn't like, it is the rough and tumble half-mile and "moon-surfaced" clay-groove track in Hagerstown Maryland.  This was only my third time on the track and first time on a 450 single.  I have been here as an amateur during a AMA Sports Regional qualifier after a national and run during the day.  I clearly remember it being a mess.  Huge craters and chunks of track missing, and it was so dry that it looked like the Mojave desert or something you see in a National Geographic magazine.
