Matt was looking forward to this race and thought this might be the place for his first GNC Podium. The first practice session out, he set the fastest time with a 25.8 second lap time. The 2nd session, which is the first one that counts, he did not look good, and watching him you could see something was wrong. He came in and was 5th fastest, but said the bike was broken; the transmission was jumping in and out of gear. He said it was pretty scary, the rear wheel felt like it was locking up and he almost got off a couple times. He grabbed the back up bike and went back out and qualified 2nd fastest in the last round, but the track got slower, so the first one counted for the overall. |

Joe Winston (14) leads Jimmy Wood (37), Briar Bauman (10) and the rest of the Pros into turn one Southern California Flat track Association Round 5 SCFTA, Perris Raceway, Round 5, June 12, 2009 Story & photos by Fred Windum
Jimmy Wood topped time trials, heat, trophy dash and Pro main at the Southern California Flat Track Association’s Friday night short track races at historic Perris Raceway. The only thing he was denied was the holeshot in the main, grabbed by Joe Winston. Southern California’s “June Gloom” marine layer kept the conditions overcast and cool, giving all the racers a fun track throughout the night. With racers in town for both Gene Romero’s West Coast Flat Track Series and Eddie Mulder’s West Coast Vintage Flat Track Series, the grids were full in Pro, Open Amateur and 250 races, plus good turnouts in Vet +35 and Super Senior +60. |

Midland, Michigan - Thursday, June 18 During the Benny’s Bike Rally JR Stevens from Stevens Cycle out of Bay City MI decided to put on a race at the Midland Fairgrounds’ Half Mile. I had never raced this track before, but a lot of the current pros got their feet wet at this track in their early days. The race took place Thursday, two days before the Bulls Gap TN race. They had a great purse for the riders, especially for the top three places. We had a ton of rain on Wednesday so I was a little worried about the track. We got there when the gates opened and the track looked like there was no way we were going to race that night. The guys finally got on the track an hour before practice was supposed to start. We actually got the practice over and the track shaped up better and better every time we got on it. Only the pros were racing…no amateurs. |
