Flat Track's Sweetheart
by Jim Grant

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting the hardest working gal in Flattrack, meet  Miriam Deitcher. Miriam is the eyes and ears for all of those who are not able to make the races in person.  Miriam is the speedster typist behind the AMA's Live Wire and writes a weekly column in Racer X magazine.  We here at FlattrackCom are honored to grant us this interview. Thanks Miriam!!!

We are also pleased to announce Miriams Racer X column will be included on the Flattrack.Com website.

How did you get into flat track racing?

My first exposure to flat track racing, any kind of motorcycle racing actually, was at Del Mar in 1999. My company was looking to possibly sponsor the AMA Flat Track series, so a group of us flew from Ohio to California to check out the season finale.

So that was the first motorcycle race you ever attended. What’d you think?

People are always saying Del Mar is a crappy track, but that particular race was pretty exciting. Nicky Hayden almost beat Scott Parker in an epic battle between the “up-and-coming kid” and the “about-to-retire legend”. Of course I’d never heard of either of them at the time. I was totally clueless about motorcycle racing back then.

Were you hooked on flat track from that point on?

I thought it was cool, but I can’t say I was hooked then. In 2000, I had the opportunity to attend more races and to get to know all the people involved in the sport. It was sometime then that flat track became a passion for me.

What’s your favorite track?

It’s hard to pick just one. One thing I love about flat track is the variety of track sizes and racing surfaces. If I had to pick one race to attend, I guess it’d be the Peoria TT. The racing is so exciting, the atmosphere is unreal, and the folks who run the race are so incredibly nice. But I love pea-gravel cushion half mile tracks like Lima too. And who doesn’t like the Springfield Mile?

Who’s your favorite racer?

There’s no way I’m answering that question.

Come on, you must root for someone?

Ok, I’ll admit that I secretly cheer for the young kids. I love seeing guys like Nick Cummings, Bryan Smith, or Jared Mees do well.

Which racers are the most fun to hang out with?

Gosh, I better not answer that one either. I will say that, generally speaking, flat track racers are much more fun than other people I come in contact with.

Ok, we have to ask. How do flat track guys compare to road racing or motocross guys? Which are you more attracted to?

Flat track guys are the best of course.o much.

No, seriously.

I like guys who are smart, talented, fun, and honest. It doesn’t matter if they race or not.

Our Miriam Deitcher brought in 2006 in Dallas with friend Karri Talmadge, a familiar face in the AMA Flat Track and Superbike paddocks. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about flat track, what would you change?

I wish the races were televised on a channel like SPEED. Flat track has some of the best racing in the world, and way too few people have the opportunity to see it. It’s a real shame.

So many of us follow the Live!Race coverage you provide on race day on amaflattrack.com. How did you start doing that?

I have major ADHD, which means I’m not good hanging out, doing nothing. In 2001, I set out to do something productive at the races that would better the sport, rather than just sitting around watching. I’m also a fast typist, a pretty good writer, a respectable amateur photographer, and someone who understands the value of marketing exposure. Five years later, I’ve provided live lap-by-lap coverage and behind the scenes pictures from almost every AMA Flat Track race. You can count the number of races I’ve missed on one hand.

Are you going to continue the Live!Race coverage in 2006?

I don’t know, to be honest. I really want to, but it costs money to travel to the races and as of now I don’t have any funding for 2006. Hopefully it’ll all work out, because I know there are thousands of people who enjoy the coverage. I have my fingers crossed it will all work out.

All of us at Flattrack.com hope it works out too. It seems all you ever do is give give give and no one really knows a whole lot about Miriam. Tell us a little about your life outside of flat track.

Basically, I’m just a hard-working single mom. My life really isn’t very glamorous. I wake up early, take my kids to school, go to work, come home, make dinner, do laundry, junk like that. I go to the gym as much as I can, and I like to go out with my friends and get wild at least once a week. I work hard, have tons of fun, and truly feel blessed for all I have. No complaints here.

Do you have any hobbies?

Motorcycle racing journalism is pretty much a hobby for me now. I’m a masterful shopper too, does that count? I can spend tons of money at the mall in no time flat. I strategically located my house within a mile of the best shopping in Ohio.

Any huge plans or surprises for 2006 you’d like to share with us?

Keep reading Road Racerhead on Roadracerx.com every Friday. I save all my scoop for Fridays.

All of us here at Flattrack.Com think you’re an absolute godsend and truly appreciate everything you have contributed to the sport. Your articles and the hours you put in don't go unnoticed. Thanks for everything and keep up the great work.
